Selected Artwork and Collaboration - Andrew G Milmoe
Sonic Pong
Initially a graduate school project, Sonic Pong is a gaming platform providing visually impaired people with an equal, if not better opportunity, to play and win a sound based Pong game.
The lathe hand wheel was a wildly successful way to leverage culture assumptions about interaction... people could not help themselves from turning the wheel. I was later hired by my professor to manage projects at EAR Studio. |
Skills
Microcontroller programming, wireless communications, percussion instrument design, laser cutting, contracted welding, international travel, art installation. Outcome
The latest iteration was picked up by "Pong Mythos" an exhibition that traveled throughout Europe. Honed a number of talents around laser cutting, wireless communications, interactive public art, and microcontroller programming. |
Seeking Beacon
Video documentation of real-time computer-less temporary video interactive art installation on the Frying Pan, NYC.
The piece comfortably exists in public spaces. Participants can interact with "empowered" objects, or enjoy an ambient experience by wearing a small sticker or badge. 2min 27sec, music is "Semaphore" used with permission from Kinski. |
Skills
Acquired music permissions, collaboration with film editor, video projector hacking, analog video synthesizer, optics theory, user testing in a public venue. Outcome
Installed the third iteration of this public art piece at a art installation event. In producing this video, collaborated with a film editor, successfully approached music talent to gain permissions. |
The Aphrodite Project: Platforms
Artwork by Norene Leddy, I was the technical lead.
Multiple prototypes of video GPS shoes. The piece captured headlines and prompted discussions about the relationship of culture and technology for over ten years. |
Skills
Iterative rapid prototyping, microcontroller programming, technology sourcing, hardware hacking, public speaking, wireless technology, location based systems, collaboration. Outcome
The various iterations of the piece seen worldwide: in a SIGGraph fashion show, Where 2.0 location based systems conference, and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Sex. The Aphrodite Project |
Frankie, Older Cousin to Sophia
You may know Hanson Robotics' Sophie as an AI robotic celebrity, however she had an early prototype cousin, Frankie.
As a volunteer at the Exploratorium Science Museum I reverse-engineered and re-mapped the facial expressions on "Frankie" a 31 servo robotic bust. |
Skills
Hardware hacking, event-based timeline software, servo calibration. Outcome
When the piece returned from being on loan the servos lost calibration. I was able to reverse-engineer his processes, re-calibrated Frankie and bring him back in to service. |
